By the publication of the books ‘The Real Estate Fraud’’ and numerous news reports about irresponsible practices among e.g. investment funds and housing associations, it is of great importance that companies in real estate act in an efficient, social and ethical responsible way. These values can be expressed by the term ‘corporate governance’, which formed the central theme during the first FRESH Provada Day 2010 on the 8th of June.
During the morning and noon 20 participating students runned through three workshops provided by Syntrus Achmea Vastgoed, Heijmans Vastgoed en Savills. The workshop of Syntrus highlighted the realization of a sustainable residential portfolio, in which a balance has to be made between the required return on equity and the additional sustainable investment. During the workshops of Heijmans Vastgoed and Savills students had an open discussion about issues related to real estate, which was driven by different propositions. Interesting to see are the different views students have about certain ethical issues, which reflects the complexity of the sector.
The day was closed by a short debate on the stand of PropertyNL, in which three propositions formed the point of departure. A jury, represented by the participating companies, has chosen the best discussant who won a silver goblet.
Efficient, social and ethical responsible entrepreneurship increases in importance these days. Important challenges in achieving this goal are situations of which it is still unclear how to de
al with it in a responsible way. Therefore it is recommended to develop not only industry and employment codes, but to look also after the training and support of employees and safeguarding that these codes and rules will be pursued.
