2010: Cashing Sustainability

Thursday, 6 may, the kickoff of the FRESH MasterClass took place in Café Bright City at the Zuidas, Amsterdam. The theme of the first FRESH MasterClass was about: ‘Cashing sustainability’. This is done by using the case: healthcare complex GGZ Eindhoven. To make this possible the committee had joined forces with the Dutch Green Building Council(DGBC), Finance Ideas(FI) and the Dutch Green Building Council Lab.

The afternoon was opened by chairman Richard Kooloos, Director Fortis Green Bank. In his work he is mostly busy with financing sustainability projects. The floor was then for Stefan van Uffelen, director DGBC, to speak about the BREEAM methodology. Subsequently, FI partner Mark Schweitzer introduced us to the world of real estate finance. Last was Leon Erkelens from the DGBC-lab, he introduced the case: health care complex GGZ Eindhoven. Followed up by the assignment for the afternoon: to make an investment proposal for the GGzE complex with a BREEAM label.

In groups of six students and under the guidance of a BREEAM expert, the groups worked on the assignment. They had at their disposal; the current design and measures of GGzE. In addition, they could request consultancy in total of 30 minutes from Stefan van Uffelen (DGBC), Mark Schweitzer (FI) and Michael Major (FI).

The groups then presented their proposal to the investment company formed by Annemarie van Doorn (ABN Amro), Stefan van Uffelen (DGBC) and Mark Schweitzer (FI).

The winning group of the Masterclass changed the design of the complex, which made the building costs decrease. They used the greenery to create an inner area, which is used for mental therapy. Their winning vision on the assignment was presented at the Innovator pitch of the Green forum at the PROVADA on Thursday, 10 June.
